Insulin is needed for the body to use blood glucose (sugar) for energy. Normally, the insulin allows the sugar to leave the bloodstream and enter cells where it can be used for energy. However, people with Type 2 diabetes either do not make enough insulin or it is not used properly, and blood sugar remains high for longer periods. Insulin and some types of diabetes medicines can cause low blood sugar levels.

Hypoglycemia is the term used for when you have too little sugar in your blood. Low blood sugar comes on quickly. It must be treated right away by your child, family, or friends. Hypoglycemia unawareness is not rare, occurring in 17 percent of those with Type 1 diabetes in which it occurs most frequently. Symptoms of a low become less obvious after having diabetes for several years because repeated lows impair the body's release of stress hormones.

Dietary modification led to improvements in glycemic control and medication reduction or even elimination in motivated volunteers with type 2 diabetes. Research showed that diet lower in carbohydrate (higher glycemic index) led to greater improvements in glycemic control and more frequent medication reduction or elimination than the low glycemic index diet. Furthermore, the ability of low carbohydrate diets to reduce triglycerides and to increase HDL is of particular importance. Resistance to such strategies has been due, in part, to equating it with the popular Atkins diet. Diets high in protein tend to be high in fat, particularly saturated fat. For example, the Atkins diet provides about 20% to 25% of calories from saturated fat. The research results also showed that people with the highest intakes of cereal fiber were 28% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than people with the lowest intakes.

Further analysis suggested that the less the proportion of energy from fat, the less the risk of diabetes. But this link disappeared once the researchers accounted for the impact of any accompanying weight loss. Nevertheless, contrary to some news reports, diets high in complex carbohydrates and low in fat do not impair glucose tolerance; most evidence indicates that such diets improve insulin sensitivity. Furthermore, the abdominal fat is of a different quality than fat of other body parts: Abdominal fat sends out hormonal messages to the brain which are undesirable. Therefore, exercise designed to help get rid of abdominal fat may yet confer additional health benefits.
